Hi Olivia, Are Stevie and Sally neutered? If not it might be best to separate them unless you want lots of baby ferrets! Ferrets also smell a lot less if you get them neutered and also depending on what they sleep in. If you give them old jumpers and things you can wash them to reduce the smell, mine smell like Daz for days after changing their bedding! Sharon

Hi everyone, we had a brilliant day. We were all shattered (even the fuzzies) by the end of the day though. Sharon mine were really hyper today as well. Maybe they wanted to go again (wouldn't surprise me). It was my first ever show and I am so glad we came. Even my daughter Steph had a great time and can't wait till Scone. I think I may have recovered by then. Thanks everyone for making it a great day. Helena

I don't know about the rest of you but I was totally shattered last night and today! Strangely my ferrets were up to high doh as although they were at the show they weren't out much as Roddy and I were so busy with other stuff. Poor things! I hope you all had a good time and that it was worth your while coming. Had a nice phonecall tonight from someone (Roddy forgot the name) saying that it was wonderful and everyone made them feel so welcome, which is really what it was all about:- getting together and meeting other ferret owners. Again, I hope everyone enjoyed themselves, I will try and get some photos and the results posted as soon as I can. Sharon

I'm going to completely clear out and scrub everything, and change things about, and let the new one investigate first, then put him in a hutch inside the run, then put the others in one at a time. I don't like the idea of castrating him, I think i'd rather give him to someone without any other pets before i'd do that,he is a very good house pet,has been treated like a baby! I'll give it a try, anyway, and go from there, thanks girls-lynda

Introducing ferrets to an already established group can be incredibly difficult. If you are planning on neutering him do so and leave it a month til his hormones have calmed down. During this time swap their bedding, their poo, even their accomodation. I put our existing ferrets in the cage and let the new ones have the run of the room and kept swapping them over. Try introducing them on neutral ground and if that's not possible move stuff about so the territory has changed. Try introducing the meekest ferret first then add more as things settle down. Sorry I don't know your name. Is he grabbing them by the scruff on the back of the neck (and is this what he was doing to the other male he was originaly with)? Had he always been housed with this other male or was he a new edition? Your problem could just be hormones. It may be solved by simply castrating him then trying him again in about a month once the hormones have died down. Helena

Helena, the other ferrets I have, are all silver mitt ferrets except for a male polecat, two of the silvers are female, one of which is imprinted. They are usually very accepting of other ferrets/people, but the new one's fear making it attack, and then it's getting into severe fights. left them together for about 10 minutes, but was obviously not going to settle down.

Helena, sorry, not at all well, throat and ear infection, can't phone you just now. I'll just keep typing. Yes, he's an entire hob, last year's young, silver mitt x silver/polecat. He is not as big as the massive male silvers I already have, but is quite big. I don't want you to take him or anything, I just need to decide whether or not it would be better for HIM to be in a single ferret family, or integrated with his fellow ferrets. If it is possible to happily integrate him, I'm sure I'll manage to do it, just don't know if it would be in his favour or not to put him through it.

I though he was a jill. Now I have loads of questions. How old is he? Helena,he is VERY TAME, just not with other ferrets. I don't know whether I should persevere with introducing them slowly, or find it a home where it will be an only ferret. If I thought it would be happier in the long run, I would work hard at introducing it to the five others I have, maybe one at a time. All of the others are happy to be together, and tame with me, but live in a large run outside.

Where are you based? I may be able to help you but after typing loads I thought it would be easier to help you over the phone. As I have a tiny wee silver mitt jill who was very badly treated and was literally scared of her own shadow. She was terrified of people and animals equally (if I went near her cage she flew across the cage AT me). Now she is lovely and sweet, I would quite happily let her near my face now. Last night I got a phonecall from a little girl asking if I would take her little sister's ferret, because it was beating up her male ferret, and had bitten a child; I took it immediately, and when I tried to introduce it to my other ferrets, I realised it is not a bully, just terrified! It is terrribly tame to hold, used to living indoors, and terrified of other ferrets. What chance have I got of integrating it with the others? It seems only to speak human! I thought of putting it in a cage inside the run so it gets used to the others, but I think it's so scared, even this would be too much for it.

Also I forgot to say below, For earmites if your fuzzie has them you could use WARM oil in ears to loosen wax and help to clear dead mites(put a couple of drops into ear, then give a gentle rub to help it go down to the bottom of ear canal, clean any wax deposits you can see with a tissue. NEVER INSERT ANYTHING INTO FERRETS EAR). You still need to use Stronghold or some other earmite treatment as well. Helena FFR

Ear mites and worming a ferret. I used to use worm paste and canural. Nightmare trying to do ears on a ferret twice a day for a week. Now I use Stronghold droppers from vets. The one for puppys and kittens. 1 whole dropper on the back of the necks between the shoulder blades. It treats worms, earmites, fleas, in fact everything. It covers them for a month. Greatest thing ever. It costs about £15 for a box of 3 though. Hope this helps. Helena

We have used Canural in the past, available from the vet. It's a bit fiddly as it needs to be applied twice daily and if you have a lot of ferrets they all need done at once. I have also used frontline but have since found out that this is very controversial and is not advocated by the manufacturers. I have wormed my ferrets once, but again it was an injection from the vet. I'm sure Helena will know as she does this regularly with incoming ferrets to the rescue. Sharon

Looking into free guestbooks but most of them have ads or pop-ups which are just as bad and may still be targetted by the bots. there's eBay as well - almost scary, the amount some will be happy to paypal you for absolute junk!!! Most rescues I've read about on the Internet charge a fee for rehoming to cover basic costs - the SSPCA does for sure, but it's disguised as a minimum goodwill donation..... that way, any cost dissuades those on a whim & you don't end up with the same poor confused fuzz back on your doorstep a couple of weeks later! If you can find a local fuzz-knowledgable vet who can do basic ops, you should be able to keep charges to a minimum, up to a point. One SFC non-Internet member I know uses the vet in Brook Street, Broughty Ferry - may be worth you ringing round the local surgeries? Annx

Hi i run a rescue in bathgate and i knew it would cost so i wondered how i could raise money and guess what i looked around the house and gathered up all the things i never used ie 200 videos and sold them at a car boot sale first time is the worst and i made a good amount to help my little friend's also i ask for a donation i dont take them to get spayed /dressed as the budget just wouldnt cover this as some time's you may only get £5 for a ferret and it costs in the region of £40 for the operation so you would be well out of pocket now just waiting for the summer to come in as got more stuff from family /friends to do another car boot sale.Wullie

Do yourself a favour though. Take donations, even ask for them if you have to. Unfortunately every penny counts, it's not just food, bedding, toys etc. You could end up with vet bills or even things like flea, mite and worm control. It all adds up. I sometimes wonder how I manage to find the money as whatever donations don't cover has to come out of my pocket. So far I have more it has worked out about 1/3rd donations 2/3rds my pocket. Apart from the finances it is very rewarding. Good luck. Helena FFR

Bots is short for WEB-BOTS, annoying liitle programs that trawl through the internet looking for web page guest books like this one. They find it then repeatedly enter messages advertising poker, viagra and the like. Most annoying! Sharon

Wullie, One of our polecat jills had a large lump on the side of her neck. We took her to the vet and he thought that it was a tumour and we decided to leave her be as long as she was happy. A few months later this 'tumour' burst turns out it was only an infection so she got a course of antibiotics and is still doing fine. Jenn

Hi Sharon, Yes, use the story - do you want me to write it up better? Maybe you could start a column of working ferret stories, I'm sure people must have some great ones, and I'd love to hear them. The old ferreter whose jill is in my story ferrets along my strath almost full time. He will get 100+ rabbits off my place in a week and then a few weeks later he'll come back and get nearly the same again! He probably has lots of stories... only problem is he is a solitary old fellow and doesn't like being approached when he is working so it's hard to get a blather with him. Paddy

Wullie asked for some topics to be got going to make the site more interesting - I'd like to hear some stories about working ferrets, especially escapees and their return etc. I recently went to open my shed with my ferret runs and a strange ferret popped its head up out one of my ferret boxes stored in there! I live in a remote strath in Sutherland, no nearby neighbours. I caught her and caged her and discovered later that she was a working ferret who had stuck down a hole about half a mile from my place three weeks earlier. The ferreter was delighted to have her back, she was his best worker. It turns out that this ferret tends to do this but stays around the same area and her owner keeps returning to the place until he gets her again days or even weeks later. Just over a year ago she did this and was on the loose for several days before being caught again, and in due course she produced a litter of kits! He has no hob. There must have been a wild ferret in the area where she was on the loose! Nice kits, and he is now working some of them! Further to this story a neighbour of mine lost a big poley hob, Donnie, while ferreting some years back and he has been sighted in our glen many times since then. Then one night about a year ago she heard a lot of noise from the shed and went in and there was Donnie, going at the ducks. He was very wild, and not being one for sentimentality she shot him! She lives just along from where the jill was lost that got mated by the wild hob so it was very likely Donnie who sired the kits. Anyone with other stories? Paddy

I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble. Why can't you get in via your bookmarks? Is it taking you to a dead link? I did a quick search on Yahoo and google and we came out in the top 5 on both. Just typing in ferret club came up 7th! I realise there is an extra click to get into the message page now but surely that won't put people off? I can't find any dead links and either www.scottishferrets.co.uk or my pwp page at blueyonder gets me into the site. Is there some compatibility problem with your browsers? I thought taking the java out would help as a lot of people wouldn't use this. Seems to have gone horribly wrong somewhere. Again, I can't find any probs, all searches and links bring me to the right place. Sharon

many thanks for the great info given, i will def take it all on board,i have contacted a guy in irvine who had posted a notice of having 4 hobs all sandy col. i am just waiting for info back. to be honest i wasnt the biggest fan of ferrets( my partner is the expert ) but after the castle event , i can see why you guy's just love them, as i said this is primeraly for the other half ( an old poacher! in his day, and a very succesfull one if all the story's are true! mmmm well you know what poachers are like!!!) so i know that he knows, maybe not everything ( as im sure you are always learning where animals are concerened! ) but enough to be a confident owner. the thing is he is unawear that i am getting them for him, as i said i would never let him have them ever!, and i know he will be so overjoyed if i can locate 1 or better 2 for him. any way fingers crossed thanks again fiona x

Hi Fiona We stay in Glasgow and built up our ferret family this year. We have 3 hobs all from different places. One was from Bathgate from working stock, one from Port Glasgow from a pet breeder and the last from the SSPCA at Cardonald (History unknown). They are all characters (none have bitten or even nipped)and I wouldn't recommend one source over the others. My one comment is that as a relatively novice owner I felt I knew more about ferrets than the staff at Cardonald who told me they had a neutered male that (even to my inexperienced eyes) was obviously a baby who hadn't matured. They also gave him to me stating that he was a biter who needed handling with leather gloves. He isn't and doesn't. I don't think that they actually get many ferrets in (hence their apparent limited knowledge)but it would be worthwhile speaking to them as they may have another gem(s) like our one. ps try and get confident with handling ferrets before you take the plunge as I think that this will go a long way to getting off to the right start with any new family members

Caroline - I got a book or two cheap from Amazon, got online & researhed aa lot, managed to meet a mob of pet ferrets to see if I was the right person for them (not the other way round - the animals' welfare is more important than mine!)then got Ollie when he was 3 months old & well-handled by his humans. Luckily, I was off work for a while, so had time to sit & handle him & play with him a lot. Now, he's a beautiful cuddly fuzzy ambassador - but like Helena said, it took time & persistence & research - plus a frendly helpful voice on the phone if anything made me panic!! There's lots of sites listed here that will tell you just about anything you need to know before committing to being responsible for an animal that can live around ten years http://www.excite.co.uk/directory/Recreation/Pets/Ferrets The best page on the list I've read so far is this one http://home.wanadoo.nl/defret/ Happy reading!! Caroline, like Robbie said "THEY BITE" it takes a lot of proper time and good handling to turn them into they lovely friendly things you might see people with. This is the image us responsible ferret keepers want to promote and we work hard to get them like that. They need good handling and care EVERY DAY. They need to be taught how to behave. In the wrong hands they are viscious and smelly little monsters. Even a young baby can give a really sore bite. Could you imagine an big adult biting a not letting go. I think they are wonderful pets and would never be without them but you will need to do a LOT of research before you even think about getting one. You will need to find out all about the potential problems with hobs and jills, ie. Jills seasons and the health problems it can cause. Then you will need to ask yourself "can I give a ferret the time, care and attention it needs?" not "do I still want one?" with ferrets you really need to be 100% sure you can see to all it's needs. I am sorry if it seems like I am trying to put you of, I'm not, I just want you to make sure you know what you are taking on first. Then if you decide to get a ferret you can enjoy you pet instead of regretting getting one and trying to find a new home for an anti-social ferret. Good luck. If you have any other questions just ask us but do some research first and you will get a much better response. Helena

caroline. Just from your post i would suggest you look for something else. CLEARLY you have not researched anything of ferrets. Costs are ranging but generally cheap. The number of ferrets will determine how much space they need. I actually am not going to write any more. You need to do your own research. But put it this way. THEY BITE. They will bite you if you have little knowledge of there needs. ~ Robbie

Will be an open show but there will not be general public unless they are there to enter the show. More of a winter ferret get together rather than the PR events that we do in the summer. Sharon.

Hay, I'm the one who is interested but put off by distance. I'm Robbie. Been posting on here for a while. To the admin, maybe a nicename system ( in a form setup) would be a good html/php feature. I'm just outside Edinburgh. When asked would i be interested would that entail PR work with ferrets hands on? I could make an exception interms of distance in that case lol.

I have permission in the farm woods outside Bonnyrigg. My granddad knows the farmer and land owner. My family have an estate in Dumfries, and occasionally I get given permission from the Pentlands commission if there is abundance.

Hay Wullie. I'm sort of new to this forum, should i have a name at the end of every post? Also does this forum take CSS/HTML? I've been keeping ferrets since i was 5. I'm 18 now. YEAH, great pets. I've had just about every kind of pet under the sun and Ferrets have to be top if not a close second.

Hay all. Sorry, yet again i seem to have neglected to come on here and post afew things. I was the one who posted about my 2 4 monthers and Evil biting me hehe. No, no blood or anything, just holding on for dear life. My mother got bitten in the thumb though by him. STUPIDLY she tried to feed him corned beaf at the same time as stroking him. Silly woman. About a show or two through the winter. Sounds a good idea. I'd be glad to come along and cheer ^^ I could even bring my two. Both seem very well on the lead now. Anyways, I'll visit more often. See ya'll.

Know what you mean, mine are just putting on their new coats and they are beautiful. There is no good reason not to have a winter show other than 1, we don't have a venue, 2, we would need prizes, 3, would people travel just to a ferret show as opposed to a game fair and 4 we would need a judge. Any suggestions on how to organise the above greatly appreciated. Sharon

Hello, My name is Jeudi Hathaway and i hail from Comrie in Perthshire. I would like to post the availability of some kits. Currently they are 16 weeks old and are all very healthy and happy. We keep the mother and father as pets, (Basil and Orchid) but both parents come for working stock. As Orchid is an albino and Basil is fairly light coloured the babies are also lightly coloured. (3 albino and 5 light carmel coloured) There are 3 jills and 5 hobs. If anyone is interested in them please feel free to email me at the following address: Caltuinn@yahoo.com thanks very much jeudi

Hi My name is Finlay The Evening Times in Glasgow are running a Pet Idol Competition. There are only 3 ferrets entered. I have entered one of mine. Paddy a Polecat. I think it would be great if a ferret done won so people can find out what great pets they are. It would be great if ferret lovers everywhere could vote for one of the ferrets (especially mine!) To see the pictures go to www.eveningtimes.co.uk and click on the link for Pet Idol. All of the ferrets are in supplement one. Thanks Finlay ps Great web site and I am going to speak to my dad about joining the club

Sharon, I had a look at your vet's site - good idea. Interesting to see that one vial can do 4 ferrets. Makes me wonder if all those other vets who do 1 per ferret are just ripping folk off or if they are overdosing the ferrets through ignorance? Helena, I sent you an email re: Silvers a couple of nights ago, wondered if you got it? Regards, George

Sharon/George. Your local vet can tell you if your area is a "non endemic area" ie distemper free, in these areas boosters only needed every 3yrs for ferrets. It is supposedly mainly the west coast that has distemper due to less dogs being vaccinated. It was my vet who showed me all this with info sheets they had received. I think the same applies as for dogs with the boosters though. I will probably only get mine the first ones so they have some immunity, even though I get my dogs done every year. Helena.

Helena/Sharon There is a school of thought among the veterinary profession promoting the idea that dogs do not require distemper boosters and that the initial vaccination seems to provide sufficient protection, presumably by kick-starting their immune system to produce their own antibodies. I wonder if this would apply to ferrets? Might be worth looking into. I don't know how you would find out which areas are affected by the distemper virus but I would assume that areas which are frequented by stray dogs could be considered suspect. George

Hi Helena/George I used to get my ferrets vaccinated but have to admit none have been done for 2 years now. Helena, you mentioned that it was only required evry 3 years do you have a source for this? George, any ideas where to find out areas affected with the virus to help make a more informed descision? I have to say other than the ferret club outings our ferrets rarely come into contact with dogs and I'd imagine most of the pooches at the game fair were vaccinated seeing as most are very valuable dogs. Hi George, The main reason I want to get them done is I sometimes take them out to places where dogs go. With it coming up to holiday season as well there is more chance of dogs from distemper areas having been there. It always seems like a good idea at the time but then I worry incase I have brought anything back and I would hate to lose all my fuzzies when a simple jag could have covered them. Helena

Helena, Unless you are in the habit of exposing your ferrets to the distemper virus, whether it be via dogs with distemper or places where distemper carrying dogs have visited, why have your ferrets vaccinated? To be honest, I haven't met anyone who does have their ferrets vaccinated against distemper. That's not to say there aren't people who do have it done but I'm willing to bet there aren't many. Does anyone know of a vet in Fife who does the single Distemper vaccination as my vet only has the multi one for dogs with parvo etc. He assures me it is safe but l would rather not put more chemicals into my fuzzies than is needed if possible. Also does anyone have any idea of the price as l have 17 fuzzies all to be done soon. Cheers Helena
